Servare Vitas.

To save lives. For the men of the FBI’s elite Hostage Rescue Team, it’s not just a motto; it’s a creed they live by. Nobody knows that better than Special Agent Nate “Doc” Schroder, the team medic. As a former Pararescueman, Nate is accustomed to going into harm’s way to save people—including his wife, Taya—no matter the risk to his own life. But when a catastrophic event turns the tables on the team, suddenly he’s the one whose life needs saving.

However, survival is merely the start of Nate’s battle, because it’s going to take a lot more than medical expertise to pull him through the dark days ahead. While his teammates rally around him, Taya fights to drag the man she loves back into the land of the living. With her at his side and his team at his back, Nate must find new reason to dig deep as he struggles to become whole again.

Kaylea Cross’s HRT series has always been one that I’d enjoyed straight after her Bagram books because those felt fresh and different, so it’s probably something I’ll look back on fondly for this reason. I’d been feeling rather lukewarm at the moment about Cross’s DEA FAST books of late because they seem too much like a rinse and repeat of the HRT series, so ‘Shattered’ return to this world was more than a pleasant surprise and also a good reminder of why I like that particular group so much, well, some more than others really.

It’s pretty much a novella that plays catch-up with all of the team members, with chapters in their POV and what ties them together this time is an accident that puts Nate Schroder and Taya in the spotlight once more, with a pile of bad getting worse before the light (quite literally) is seen at the end of the tunnel. And for something so short, Cross does pack a punch, keeping me engrossed in a conflict that I didn’t see coming at all. Her HEA is always guaranteed, and though it requires some suspension of disbelief at how nice and neatly things all work out almost magically especially after a huge blow here, it’s probably still a fitting end to what should really be Cross’s swan-song in this series.

She thought her past was behind her.
After nearly dying at the hands of a madman in New Orleans a year ago, Zoe Renard has worked hard to put that trauma behind her and move on. With her man at her side she’s focused on her writing career and building a future together. Things are almost perfect between them, until a series of shocking events turns her world upside down again. An unforeseen threat is looming, and it’s more lethal than anyone realizes. Only this time, hers isn’t the only life at stake.
But the nightmare isn’t over yet.
HRT member Clay Bauer never expected to fall in love again, but what he has with Zoe is better than anything he ever could have imagined. After what happened to her in New Orleans he’s ever vigilant about her safety, so when a new threat emerges he’ll do everything in his power to keep her safe. But even a former SEAL can’t protect her from an enemy he can’t see coming. And by the time he realizes the true extent of the danger, it may be too late for them all.

Clay Bauer and Zoe Renard return in this short novella, where a new challenge threatens their happy, stable life in coupledom. Not my favourite pairing, but it was good to see the involvement of Tuck and Celida (whom I liked a lot more) as well as the potential outline of a loose thread – the introduction of the Valkyries – that wasn’t tied up in one of the later HRT books. It’s all’s well that ends well (and perhaps too neatly, happily and unrealistically wrapped up) but hardcore fans of HRT and Kaylea Cross would enjoy this nonetheless.

Sometimes the one you were meant to be with…
Marisol Lorenzo landed her dream job as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and is working on the case that could make her career; now she’s determined to put away the most dangerous drug lord in the country. But his incarceration has opened up a lethal turf war among his lieutenants. Their enforcers are out hunting their enemies, and anyone who gets in their way. When one of them sets his sights on Marisol, she turns to a man she grew up with and has wanted for years—a member of the FBI’s elite Hostage Rescue Team. Even though she thinks he’ll break her heart when he leaves town, it’s a risk she’s willing to take.
Has been right in front of you all along.
Special Agent Ethan Cruz is back home in Miami with his team to take down a dangerous fugitive linked to the case Marisol is working on. He’s focused on his job and not looking for a relationship, until she captures his attention so completely that he’s consumed with the need to make her his. Though he knows he should keep his distance, the explosive attraction sizzling between them makes it impossible. He’s always had a soft spot for her but now his feelings are so intense he can’t shut them off. What starts off as desire quickly runs deeper, becoming something more powerful than he’s ever known. And when Marisol winds up in the crosshairs of the most lethal enforcer of all, he’ll put everything on the line to save her.

A somewhat disappointing read after the buildup of Marisol and Ethan in the last book. Yes, there’s suspense, and loads of action and a strangely sympathetic villain who got me going more than the main characters.

I’m not a fan of instant-love and it seems doubly unbelievable when a man whom Marisol has grown up with all her life suddenly takes notice of her and decides he has feelings so deep that’s called love – after telling her that a hookup he had with a friend a decade ago was someone he could barely remember because she meant ‘nothing’.

Good way to treat women, Cruzie.

When the past and present collide... Taya Kostas is a survivor. She's clawed her way back from the hell she was subjected to at the hands of an undercover agent working for the U.S. government. Since then she's dedicated her life to preventing the same from happening to anyone else. Now her story has come full circle. She's about to take the stand as the key federal witness in the biggest terrorist case the country has seen in years. But even though the man responsible for her nightmares is behind bars, the evil she escaped is still hunting her. When fate places her safety in the hands of the man who saved her life once before, together they race to stay one step ahead of a lethal enemy. He'll risk it all to save her.
For five years Special Agent Nathan Schroder has been battling his inner demons, but lately it seems like he's on the verge of losing that fight. Then Taya is suddenly thrust back into his life and in imminent danger, so he steps in to protect her. He's never forgotten her or the way she held up under fire, and this time he's not letting her walk away. The terrorists determined to prevent her from testifying will stop at nothing to silence her forever. She might be in official protective custody, but she's way more than a job to Nate. When the enemy finally strikes and her life hangs in the balance, he'll do anything to keep her safe.

I did like this addition to the HRT series, which is turning out to be a very entertaining one thus far, even if Avenged really isn’t my favourite. As much as I wish Kaylea Cross didn’t add a typical manwhore to the mix, I did appreciate her understanding of PTSD in here and her portrayal of a civilian heroine who has it together without needing to be a kickass, take-no-prisoners military personality.
