After fleeing her beloved small town five years ago, Julia Bailey is back to spend Christmas with her family. Returning is hard, but keeping the devastating secret about her late husband is even harder. Her place isn't in Big Sky Country any longer...but the more time she spends with the irresistible Sheriff who saved her once before, and his adorable little daughter, the more Julia starts wishing she could let go of the past and start a new life.

Single dad and county Sheriff Chase Donovan had been secretly in love with his best friend's wife for years. But after her traumatic loss he knew Julia needed to get away from Shadow Creek, even though helping her leave was the last thing he wanted to do. Now she's home and he doesn't intend to lose her a second time. Chase is going to prove to Julia just how good they can be together this Christmas...and forever.

Bittersweet, very vanilla and full of angst that turns into teary HEAs would be what I always will associate Victoria James with and this aspect of her books – like a Hallmark or a Lifetime movie – suits the festive season perfectly with the themes of joy and hope it espouses. James’s small town romances are filled with picture-perfect views, secondary characters who are lovingly and sweetly meddlesome (but never cloyingly gossipy and murderous) and welcoming smiles from the charming locals who take care of their own. There’s a communal love-fest waiting to happen, as second chances emerge after a tragedy splits family and friends for five long years, though not without hiccups and rather predictable running away.

The start to this new series is interesting though – and begins on a season high – and with a perfect set-up for the next book at least, I’m cautiously optimistic to see where this is all going.

ABOUT VICTORIA JAMES

Victoria James

Victoria James is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romance.

Victoria always knew she wanted to be a writer and in grade five, she penned her first story, bound it (with staples and a cardboard cover) and did all the illustrations herself. Luckily, this book will never see the light of day again.

In high school she fell in love with historical romance and then contemporary romance. After graduating University with an English Literature degree, Victoria pursued a degree in Interior Design and then opened her own business. After her first child, Victoria knew it was time to fulfill her dream of writing romantic fiction.

Victoria is a hopeless romantic who is living her dream, penning happily-ever-after’s for her characters in between managing kids and the family business. Writing on a laptop in the middle of the country in a rambling old Victorian house would be ideal, but she’s quite content living in suburbia with her husband, their two young children, and very bad cat.

‘The Rebel’s Return’ is classic Victoria James: tooth-achingly sweet and so light that you can flutter away with stars in your eyes, especially with the Mayberry-like characters that populate the fictional town of Red River who always manage to get their heads screwed on in the right place at the very end.

I’d thought the Red River series complete, but jumped on this resurrected storyline just to revisit the cast of characters who now are part of the nosy ensemble as they watch Natalia and Aiden dance around each other, get over a decade-long wound and find their HEA. Pairing-wise, it all seemed a little too perfect as Nat and Aiden never quite wanted anyone else but each other, even as Aiden’s stupid mistake – and his inexplicable inability to own up to it until the very end – tore them apart. I did like Natalia’s personal convictions and her straight and narrow road of going down the path she wanted to go, but felt Aiden needed to grow a spine, own up to his actions because I simply thought at times, that Nat truly deserved much better than him.

Because of its length, this book wastes absolutely no time on doling out bucket loads of angst. James’s focus is and has always been really, a paved way to domestic bliss, even if some much-needed conflict and depth of character do get sacrificed a wee bit in the process.

Teacher Kate Abbott's fresh start in Still Harbor was the beginning of the life that she and her two best friends always imagined for themselves. Still, being a working single parent of a special needs daughter hasn't exactly improved Kate's love life. But Kate's preference for nachos over men quickly disappears when she meets the oh-so-sexy Matt Lane.
Until she finds out he's a cop.
Matt is a former cop-turned-private investigator, and he knows fear when he sees it. A cop clearly spooked Kate...or hurt her. Still, something about the gorgeous professor catches his attention, and despite his "no settling down" policy, he can't resist her. But all of the attraction in the world won't be enough to overcome Kate's past...

Kate’s usual choice of nachos over men is overturned when the guy at the bar actually turns out to be the one she really needs. Except that Matt Lane is a hot, former ex-cop turned P.I.–a dream and a nightmare come to life. With an adopted daughter with Down Syndrome, Matt’s no-commitment lifestyle is about to challenged when he realises it’s Kate whom he really wants, even after a failed marriage that had him strolling down the swinging bachelor walkway.

I did like the intrigue of Kate’s past and her beef with cops, although that really isn’t revealed until nearly the end of the book. Her lack of trust in Matt up to the end got a little annoying but Matt’s unwavering stalwart nature won out at last.

Falling for the P.I. is classic Victoria James: simple, saccharine sweet, family-centric and chock full of decent characters with pasts that still haunt them…with the affirmation that fairy tale endings can happen for ordinary people (at least in fiction).

Starting over and starting a whole lotta trouble…
Meredith Anderson left her difficult past behind to create a new life for herself in Tall Pines—where she can be the independent, confident woman she always dreamed of being. Now she's a partner in her sister's wedding planning business, helping brides realize their happily-ever-afters…even as she promises herself to never fall in love.
Meredith's sweetness and vulnerability brings out the protective side of rancher Gage McAllister—even though their worlds are miles apart. All it takes is one night for desire to take hold of them both, a sizzling encounter that can only lead to the promise of more. But Meredith isn't looking for more, and even if she was, Gage is set to leave Tall Pines behind him…

I’ve been waiting for this a long time and Victoria James has a knack of writing Meredith and Gage so sweetly that I’m just about to suffer from a toothache – willingly. (On a side note, Ms James seems to write men exactly the way women want them to be.) There’s some angst and some secrets to be revealed along the way, but their story was surprising in many ways but fulfilling and satisfying. Pretty much worth the wait, I’d say.

Victoria James does have a sweet way of portraying relationships and the angst that comes with them. It was hard however, to believe that Quinn and Holly could pick things up so easily after 10 years.

I felt in particular, that there were some issues (such as Quinn’s hasty relationship with Christine immediately after Holly’s departure despite him wanting her) that hadn’t been satisfactorily resolved – and shouldn’t be explained away with a single line that glibly says ‘it was a painful period of my life’. It’s all well and good that he wanted to make amends and all, but this story was pushing too much towards the future while not sufficiently dealing with the past and the unrequited love that Holly carted around for so long.
